ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“ I carve myrtlewood logs reclaimed from the beaches near my home in Trinidad, California. My commitment is to engage in the act of discovery in both the raw material and creative process with an intuitive and aggressive chainsaw carving technique, allowing the form to evolve as I work. After carving the shape to an even shell, I kiln dry and then refine the form with scrapers, chisels, and sandpaper. I thickly apply a coating, combined of beeswax and mineral oil, to the piece and then cure it in a kiln for twenty-four hours, before applying the final coat of paste wax. The finish allows in the viewer the direct sensual experience of touching wood. All of my sculptural vessels share interplay of points and planes to arrive at their tension of movement.”
