Alfa Portraits

For Michael Furman, the world’s preeminent automotive photographer, fine automobiles deserve to be seen as fine art.

“We’ll give the audience a sense of what Alfa Romeo means to the car world,” Furman says. “Pre-World War II, it was as fine a performance car as any ever made – extraordinarily well designed and very advanced technically. They were a wonderful combination of power and beauty. The Italians know how to make cars beautiful.”

Furman’s fine art approach creates what he prefers to call portraits, elegant studio photographs that express the historical and aesthetic importance of each car. The photographer succeeds in presenting each one from the perspective of the designers and engineers who created it, visually communicating their thoughts and motivations, and the social and political context in which they worked.
