Patina Gallery reunites with Santa Fe sculptor Roberto Cardinale to introduce a brand-new chapel-inspired sculpture for the holiday season.
The artist returns to Patina for the first time in over a decade to present the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut (Our Lady of the Heights), honoring its likeness of the chapel by Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier, located in Ronchamp, France.

The renaissance maker dedicated his early life as a Benedictine monk. As an artist, Cardinale has been a ceramicist, sculptor, metalsmith, professor, and president of both the San Antonio Art Institute and New Mexico Museum of Art.
“I’m trained as a sculptor, so I consider these works as sculptures. I really study the form, then I start out directly on the wood. I do it by feel and by eye. I look at it the way a sculptor would, not a model renderer.”

Cardinale was an early artist to the gallery, going back over 20 years where he showed sculptures inspired by churches and cathedrals around the world. Inspirations for his work that are set closer to home pay tribute to New Mexico missions and churches such as the Loretto Chapel and El Santuario de Chimayó, among others.

Like Le Corbusier’s masterpiece, Cardinale’s work of art is a direct response to space.
As you make your way around Cardinale’s composition, you’ll begin to admire the intimate level of detail, heightened by decisions made in design that make his work come to life. Attributes, including the mixtures of color, meshes of texture, carefully molded forms, and exterior embellishments that honor scale and proportion, are all a nod to its original counterpart.
This dynamic statement beautifully reveals portions of the artist’s process as well as its backstory as both a religious and architectural legacy.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Notre-Dame du Haut will benefit Cornerstones, a New Mexico nonprofit dedicated to restoring historic structures and preserving cultural landscapes across New Mexico and the greater Southwest.
