Modernist painter Marsden Hartley was passionate about the works of Albert Ryder. Hartley had the unique ability to set up his studio anywhere he was staying—constantly moving to different places and painting wherever he laid his head. This became a preoccupation that he repeated time and again in his life. Hartley coined the phrase “studio of the mind” during his later years, just after the Second World War. This mural, which I discovered on a side street in Española, made me think of Albert Ryder.
