Clay, oil & acrylic paint
Gretchen Ewert borrows images from art history, museum visits and the natural imagery she captures while hiking near her home in Northern New Mexico. Her hand-rubbed clay pieces evoke the mythic connection of nature to man. With every texture, color and treatment, the artist proves once again that surface is an ever present piece of the work.
The artist begins with oil and acrylic paints and curiously, rubs its fine eccentricities onto the surface of the piece with newsprint. The result is a clean, simple look that reminds Gretchen of her roots as a printmaker. Her clay pieces recall primitive, religious artifacts and are often adorned with animal figures. The slight asymmetry of these traditional, intimately formed shapes, and the layered finishes are designed to produce active, vivid colors and provocative imagination.
