"I started making these small sculptures in the early 80’s. For me they were originally meant as a break from making more complicated work while still being in motion, still making stuff, still in the process of being connected to what’s in my head- thumbnail sculptures, intimate, tactile, intended to be handled... Each piece is unique, but I do like certain themes, ones that also lend themselves to function as handheld. Animals, art history, natural history, myths are recombinant threads throughout all my work...
Over time they have taken on a life of their own. The word, 'totem' absolutely applies as significant/sacred objects, personal symbols, emblems... Totems usually refer to a kind of collective identity, but in this case, they are a deep, personal connection to something outside oneself, something restorative." - Gretchen Ewert
Gretchen Ewert presents her Totem Series to Patina Gallery. Each animal figure is a composite of time, a modern representation of animal relics in history and artistic, meditative introspection. Each figure within her collection possesses its own narrative through color, form and character. Quite an exquisite piece to command its own area in space or to be paired with other pieces in Gretchen's collection. The artist composes a splendid work to satiate the soul.
