Sterling silver, 18K yellow gold, rhyolites, steel, patinas
As part of Lluís Comín's Ithaca collection, a valiant portrait of Ulysses is positioned proudly from out of a plane of sterling silver. Constructing an artistic landscape to illustrate primitive, anthropomorphic spirit, Comín masterfully sculpts a character, seemingly situated by one's place in the natural world around us. The maker masterfully molds a portion of sterling silver in a form with curious resemblance to a hominid figure awash with a liberated textile upon its bosom. To one side of the silver form is rhyolites, the igneous, volcanic stone possessing pleasing hues of sage and umber. Set near the stone's base is a slight concave form of high karat gold, a palatable tone in correspondence with his work. To its opposite side is a folded spear of silver which frames the entirety of the piece. The tension of our hero against the elements of nature beckons the maker's fascination in artful, symbolistic illustration recounting the trials of the great Greek adventurer.
