Clay, oil & acrylic paint, 24K gold on stopper and jar mouth
"The Dinosaur Perfume Jar has a natural, historical reference. The Dinosaur Perfume Jar is a nod to when the Southwest was the Primordial Sea leaving a blanket of fossils when the seas receded."
A maker of the Southwest, Gretchen Ewert's hand-rubbed, clay pieces evoke the mythic connection of nature to man. Her pieces recall primitive and religious artifacts, often adorned with animal figures as such that in the Dinosaur Perfume Jar.
A prehistoric animal stands, legs perched upon the focal point of the piece with distinct collage wings reigned high. Just underneath the creature is a poised, prehistoric lizard, submissive to the sovereignty of the crouching bird. A striking presence, the figures command the piece. Their alight pillars down into the grander appendage, that of the jar. Alluding to color, glistening gold leaf atop the piece transcends to a smooth, dark hue and onto a succulent burgundy. Carefully lifting the creatures from their stand, unveils the inside of the vessel. Ewert's piece is an admirable balance of natural grit amidst the palpable luster of an exquisite work of art.
