"This abstracted cityscape was created from Elis Island, the gateway that received immigrants as they entered the United States. The island's nickname was the island of hope and tears. The view of lower Manhattan is spectacular in the evening sun. I enjoy the artistic heritage expressed in this work, as New York City was the seat of one of my favorite art periods in American Abstract Expressionism. Today, the subject of immigration is a contemporary flash point. In this piece, I seek to honor the history of immigration that is the foundation on which the United States was built." - Sol Hill
