Clay, oil & acrylic paint, 2 piece horse figure assemblage

"Persian Horse Processional Tableau was made as a mantelpiece sculpture because I have a carved wooden Victorian mantelpiece. I keep sculptures on it which I like to rearrange as a kind of diorama. Every museum seems to have a collection of ancient horse images either on vessels or freestanding, all of which are gorgeous."

Gretchen Ewert's hand-rubbed, clay pieces evoke the mythic connection of nature to man. Her pieces recall primitive and religious artifacts, often adorned with animal figures as such that in the Persian Horse Processional Tableau.

Two horses stand together in this ceramic assemblage by Gretchen Ewert. While positioned in unison, the figures are similar yet not quite the same, sustaining their own perception of personality. A bright, trilateral bowl sits atop one of the figures, with gentle care the piece may be lifted on and off the horse's back. A grand mixture of earthen tones, Ewert works to communicate work that is grounded in our world, yet with mystic complexities of their own. Accomplishing exquisite detail in defined form, her tableau is something to treasure.
