Encaustic Monotype, wax, paper on freestanding wooden frame
Using careful thought and precision, Suzy Wahl creates an artful assemblage of encaustic monotypes. Using a warmed glass plate, she draws her composition with the use of colored wax. With satisfaction, she presses strong paper onto its waxen surface to reveal a mirror image of her mind's intention. Creating pieces of art with unique, compelling personality.
Mood and landscape are brilliantly asserted through the use of color, shape and form. Recalling the landscape after the wake of a storm, Wahl cleverly infuses her canvas with the telling shades of musty brown and glimpses of pink against an alabaster sky. Just below, the flustered terrain is emulated with harsher shades of red, yellow and orange, alive in the aftermath of lively conversion from a force of nature. Distinct shapes in brown highlight the relationship of earth and sky while Wahl leaves a soft, green figure on the foreground. The green could be an altered structure or remnants of a tattered fence line. Whichever the case, Wahl paints a captivating image, which effectively harnesses the dramatic environment before us.
