Light on Light

For the 2020 holiday season at Patina, beloved New Mexico artist, Claire Kahn, unveils a spirited jewelry collection for A Season of Gratitude in her latest series of works, Light on Light.

Across soft colored beads, gems and precious metals, jewels become quiet, peaceful reverberations in progressions of white. The artist composes discoveries of solace, warmth and serenity in a celestial feast for the eyes.

“Light plays a part in whatever I do creatively, from the way it interacts with water, penetrating vertical jets at night, reflecting off the horizontal surface of a pool, or the way it brings gemstones to life with refraction and brilliance in bead crochet…This series of beaded necklaces and bracelets are similar in their minimal use of color. All the pieces in the series include variations on white and pale, quiet color. Gemstones are luminous, but with only a blush of color. The whites of the ‘chords’, along with the sparkle of diamond, sapphire and gold celebrate the Season of Gratitude.”

From her home studio in Jacona, New Mexico, the maker transforms what she observes in and around her home into visual inspiration, illustrated by palpable, beaded works of art. Color and pattern become supple treasures of time as Claire’s discerning skill unfolds into an intimate world from her mesmerizing, pointillist progressions. Gems sparkle akin to their hushed values, sweetly arranged in calming vibrations of Kahn’s milky and variegated hues.

Contemplative gestures surface through shape and movement, as the eye enjoys slow, sweeping progressions that travel from alabaster and beige to a very pale gray. The muted lure of luscious materials transport one into a clear, steady destination, rejuvenating to the soul.

Claire Kahn’s Light on Light is a whisper from the heart, as visual notes touch upon a universal pleasure and state of mind. Encompassing the core of spiritual gratitude and reflection, the artist heralds a moment of joy, entrenched in the sheer beauty of handmade, soul-stirring works.

“Every moment of light and dark is a miracle.”
