Michael Motley

Organic Dimension

“I am inspired by the primal and primitiveness of ancient artifacts, tools, and weapons, and I am compelled to strive for that simplicity and presence in my work.”

After a successful career as a graphic designer, Michael Motley returned to sculpture in 2014. The sculptor calls his pieces, “improvisational works,” constructing form with his medium of choice, the juniper root.

His work dances with dimension. Using found juniper roots and sometimes graphite, Motley seeks to evoke a sense of mystery. The sinuous roots are attractively minimal and incorporated with an historical overlay. Taking inspiration from primitive artifacts and tools, Motley creates dark, distinct sculptures that dramatically blend the elements of nature with the precision of handcrafted art.
