Genevieve Howard

Like wearing a piece of music

Genevieve Howard from Dublin, Ireland, is a classically trained musician interested in merging her skills as a designer with her love of music. She creates musical sculptures by combining new technologies such as laser cutting with traditional handmade and metalwork techniques.

My current work challenges the idea of making music into visual and three dimensional forms,” Genevieve says. “Being a musician myself, I have played and listened to music from a young age. My initial collection is inspired by pieces of music that I have played as a musician, which have enriched and given meaning to my life.”

Genevieve graduated in 2015 with a degree in metals and jewelry from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. She uses music to inspire her jewelry, translating pieces of music into tactile and wearable forms. After using a computer to decode musical scores into graphic notations, she then laser cuts Japanese linen paper and carefully stacks the sheets to mirror the musical sequence of each score.
