New Mexico Earth Day
Preserving Santa Fe Canyon
The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico & Patina Gallery - celebrating Earth Day with an environmental & creative collaboration through art + craft.
On Friday, April 22, Kay Khan, an exceptional embroidery and textile artist represented at Patina Gallery, will be presenting an exclusive handcrafted “artpack” inspired by the flowers at the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve to raise donations to aid in preserving the canyon.
What started as a PNM land gift has turned into a 575-acre oasis with wildflowers, birds, willows, deer and beaver. Funds raised by the sale of the usable “artpack” will go toward renovations at the 20-year-old nature preserve. In addition, the proceeds will be used for new signage and creating an ADA trail, a bird blind and an educational gathering space.
“I want people to know more about the great work the Conservancy is doing across our state. This organization is an inspiration to me. Plus, I’m excited for New Mexicans to get to know Kay Khan’s work. She’s one-of-a-kind.”
Ivan Barnett, Co-founder of Patina Gallery
This artpack, designed to be a practical work of art to carry necessities when hiking, was distinctively created in a vivid color palette, reverencing the natural world. It will be filled with fun gifts from some of Santa Fe’s favorite local businesses.
“Nature is, at its core, the basis for all art. The structure of nature teaches us how to build and create. The colors of nature teach us how to paint.”
Kay Khan
Kay’s work has been showcased in numerous publications around the world and is in the permanent collection of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, as well as other notable institutions.
