Where the Land
Meets the Sky

Patina Gallery Presents

For more than twenty-five years, Brooke Marks-Swanson has approached jewelry as an ever-evolving exploration of material, structure, and the act of making. Trained in jewelry design and metalsmithing, she has shaped a distinguished studio practice guided by curiosity with a desire to follow an idea deeply, understand what it has to reveal, and then move toward what comes next.

Through it all, landscape has remained a constant.
For Marks-Swanson, the land is more than inspiration; it is material and memory, rhythm and ritual, a language she has returned to across decades of making.
In Where the Land Meets the Sky, Marks-Swanson gathers materials born of earth and water. Entwining clay, stone, shell, pearl, silver, gold, and other organic elements into compositions of pattern and repetition. Built row by row and bead by bead, these intimate tactile landscapes hold the imprint of a lifelong connection to the natural world.

“I’m not inventing a new language; I’m listening to a very old one.”
Brooke Marks-Swanson
Across the collection, the irregularity of nature meets the discipline of the metalsmith’s hand. Roughness rests beside luminosity; organic forms are held within precise structures. Earth and water, shadow and light, softness and strength come into quiet conversation.
For Marks-Swanson, these relationships often begin instinctively. She gathers what draws her in, allowing one material to call to another and connections to emerge through the making itself. In her hands, materials begin a conversation, first among themselves, then with the artist, and ultimately with the person who encounters or wears the finished work.

That spirit of discovery carries Marks-Swanson from one body of work to the next.
Each collection becomes a record of a particular moment: an idea pursued, a material understood, a season of thought brought to completion. She follows a pattern, process, or material until its possibilities feel fully explored. Then she lets the inquiry rest and begins again with collecting unfamiliar elements, discovering new relationships, and following the next thread of curiosity.
Substantial in scale yet quiet in spirit, many of these works rest against the body with the presence of protective amulets. They carry traces of the earth from which their materials emerged, transformed through extraordinary attention, craftsmanship, and care.

In Where the Land Meets the Sky, the two exist side by side, held in material, carried on the body, and suspended somewhere between earth and horizon.
“There can be quiet, and strength as well.”
Brooke Marks-Swanson
