Barbara Gittings’ asymmetrical nerikomi bowl brings together the precision of layered porcelain with the unpredictability of smoke and fire. Hand-formed into an organic, flowing shape, the bowl resists symmetry, favoring a natural rhythm that feels grown rather than built. Colored clays in soft blues and greys are layered and sliced to create soft, shifting patterns within the porcelain body. Oxides and stains are worked into the surface, not painted on, giving the piece a quiet richness that feels part of the clay itself. Smoke-firing adds the final touch: carbon shadows, subtle blushes, and accidental marks that make each surface unrepeatable.
