Photograph, printed on archival acid-free, heavy paper, 2022

In her debut with the Santa Fe Opera in 1996, Racette was a major critical success in the title role in the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s Emmeline. She has since returned to Santa Fe frequently, and she and her wife, Beth Clayton (mezzo-soprano), own a house in Santa Fe. She last graced the Santa Fe Opera stage in 2019, singing the role of Kostelnička Buryjovka in Jenůfa. In 2018 she expanded her artistic expression to directing with a critically acclaimed production of La Traviata for Opera Theater of St. Louis, where she is also Director in Residence for the young artists program. The Los Angeles Times once called her “the most fearless woman in opera.”

The Metropolitan’s publication, Opera News, asked me to do a cover story on Patricia for their June 2022 issue. We hit it off. In an early meeting, Patricia asked if I wanted to see her tool room. She had more tools than I do, including two chain saws. She also showed me her library where she had a 10-foot-wide wall stacked to the ceiling with opera scores. She has sung all of them on stages all over the world.
