Roberto Cardinale presents the San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1793, in Old Town Plaza in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

San Felipe de Neri Church is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city and the only building in Old Town, from the Spanish colonial period and has remained in continuous use for over 200 years. San Felipe de Neri replaced an older church, dating to the founding of Albuquerque in 1706.

Simple yet profound, the artist's interpretation of the chapel honors the site for the spiritual revelation that it is. Cardinale captures several elements that nod to the original chapel including its layered rooflines and the soft mixtures of color and texture. He also sculpts the vivid likeness of exterior embellishments including a functional miniature door and swaying bells. All expertly and exquisitely honor scale and proportion.

Cardinale finishes the composition with a drawer on the front of the piece. Upon opening, Cardinale’s wife PJ, of 56 years, composes a mix-media collage paying homage to the church.
