Patina presents a collection of paintings by renaissance maker, Susan Wise. Wise also exhibits her works of contemporary art jewelry at Patina alongside her husband, Jeff Wise.
"With diverse methods of expression coming from both jewelry & painting, my creative expression has a multi-dimensional experience. Painting is much like swimming, with its fluid motion and transparent layering, whereas jewelry is more like an architectural project where each step forward builds to the completed vision.
I am immersed in the limitless color palette of painting, enjoying its more intuitive, quicker pace of change. I build surfaces using applied layers of textured paper and thickening gels. The imagery is developed through gestural mark making and the creation of forms from light and dark. It is a free mind dance, without conscious thought or intent, suggesting both movement and emotion. The sequential nature of the process engenders a sense of history and relationships; it's a story, laid down on the canvas.
Examples of commonality you will see in both the painting and the jewelry are in the forms, the expressions of texture & pattern.
Making jewelry with stone and metal is a fundamentally different process, having dimensionality, a strongly tactile element and it’s interaction with the human form. It’s also something I collaborate on with my husband and art partner Jeff, and we enjoy making marvelous objects in the studio together. This full circle of experience freshens the expression of both mediums…" - Susan Wise
