Cylindrical glass beads with line of tin cones with blue suede

Glass beads are arranged in 'Lyda' pattern that transitions from white to gray, gray-blue, blue, and black. Through half the strand, the artist lines her progression with a line of half-inch-long tin cones with blue suede.

In her latest summer series, Claire Kahn recalls the array of birds that prevail around her home amongst the picturesque pastureland of Jacona, NM in the Pojoaque Valley. Imagining the kingfisher, she scripts its color, texture, and movement in a beautiful pattern, amalgamating her memories into an exquisite, one-of-a-kind work of adornment.

"The kingfisher is one of my favorite birds. It comes frequently in the summer to fish in my pond. It is a relatively small bird, but husky, with a large, ruffled head and a thick, black beak. It's beautiful in color, from white to gray, deep blue, and black. When worn, shaken, or brushed, the cones along the edge of this necklace are intended to mimic the distinct rattling sound that the kingfisher makes as it flies across the water." —Claire Kahn
