The simple, elegant forms of the Cocoon series are, perhaps, the highest expression of his formal aesthetic. The artist begins with sheet metal and imbues it with a soft and organic volume, over which light softly plays. This subtle interpretation of an elegant, organic form becomes sculpture on the body.
His handmade pods are beautiful and revolutionary at once, equally alluring as they are architectural. Using an anticlastic technique, Erich hammers flat pieces of metal into unique, three-dimensional forms that call to mind seashells or just-opened mollusk shells.
