Quilted, pieced, appliquéd, hand and machine stitched, constructed, custom steel armature
Part of the artist's “Armor and Facade Series”: (how we protect and present ourselves).
"I wanted to “armor” modern society. The artworks in the Armor and Façade series are about how we protect ourselves and how we present ourselves. I began with simple ordinary ready-made garments that I deconstructed; armored with quilting, imagery and text; and then rebuilt. Garments have their mundane yet necessary purpose to protect us from the elements. But they are obviously more than that in every society. They are
our “decoration”; they express and reflect who we are as individuals and as a culture."
This ”hoodie” sculpture CONSTELLATION refers to the stars. When I was a child, my father would point out the constellations. The abstract compositions people see in the stars are intriguing. The astrological signs are a part of that stargazing as well, and some people base their lives on that.
Hoodies in our society are a contemporary form of armor. They are meant to keep us warm, but can also be used as a means of expression, or even to hide or alter one’s identity."
